Driver Shortage

Currently in the U.S. there are 3.4 million truck drivers employed in the industry. A large percentage of these drivers are expected to retire. An aging workforce, has many trucking companies unable to use trucks or add capacity at a time when freight volumes are steadily growing. According to the Department of Labor, currently the long-haul, heavy-duty truck transportation industry in the United States is experiencing a national shortage of 20,000 truck drivers. If the current trend continues, the shortage of long-haul truck drivers will increase to 111,000 by 2014.

219,000 new truck drivers must be found over the next ten years to replace drivers who are currently 55 years and older.  Companies are looking for qualified drivers to fill these positions.
